Dwelling Coverage
Covers your home's structure—walls, roof, foundation, windows—if damaged by a covered event like fire, wind, or lightning.
💡 Example: A tree crashes through your roof during a storm. Dwelling coverage pays for repairs.
Other Structures
Covers things like garages, fences, sheds, and driveways that aren’t attached to your main house.
Personal Property
Protects your belongings—furniture, electronics, clothes, etc.—even if they’re stolen or damaged away from home.
💡 Tip: Many policies limit high-value items like jewelry or collectibles. You may need extra coverage for those.
Loss of Use
Covers temporary housing, meals, and other expenses if your home is unlivable after a covered loss.
Personal Liability
Covers you if someone is injured on your property and sues, or if you accidentally cause damage to someone else’s property.
Medical Payments to Others
Pays for minor injuries that happen on your property—whether or not you're at fault. (Usually capped at $1,000–$5,000.)
What’s Not Covered by Standard Home Insurance?
❌ Flooding
Standard home insurance doesn’t cover flood damage. You’ll need a separate flood insurance policy (either FEMA-backed or private).
❌ Earthquakes
Not covered unless you specifically add it. If you live in a high-risk zone, consider a standalone policy.
❌ Wear and Tear
Insurance won’t pay for things like a leaking roof from age or lack of maintenance. That’s considered the homeowner’s responsibility.
❌ Sewer/Drain Backup
Often excluded—but you can add water backup coverage for a few extra dollars a month.
❌ Certain High-Value Items
Items like jewelry, art, or firearms may only be partially covered unless you “schedule” them with extra protection.
